  1. Seriously, cover letters are a joke. HR often screens extremely qualified resumes out even with a great, customized cover letter. With that in place job seekers are left to submit so many resumes that no one can possibly have the time to customize cover letters.

    Simply put, cover letters made sense in the days when your resume was received by a person, but now they are received by a computer and searched in a database.

  2. I wouldn’t goes as far as saying cover letters are a joke. While it is true that they are often overlooked by computer ATS, they still serve a purpose. The problem with most people is that they are relying mostly on web based job search. While you may still find a job this way, it is often longer and more of a numbers game. The point IMO is that it can never hurt to do a littl more, you never know who reads what.

    I would also say that if you have a contact that is your introduction into a company, than you better have a CL. It is very rude to not do so if there is a human link to the job you are applying for. Attrition has averaged 20% for the last two decades at American companies. In this current economy it takes knowing someone to get hired faster. There is no one way to find a in, but you need to find it. Even using a cover letter as a way to make a new network contact is a good thing.

    Remember no one ever gets yelled at for doing more work that the next guy. Happy job hunting.
