I talked with an engineer at Apple about a physical keyboard on the iPhone 5. The design we discussed has a large physical landscape keyboard on the back with a display above it. The back display automatically activates and stays in sync with the front display whenever the iPhone is in data entry mode. Then anything typed on either the virtual keyboard or the physical keyboard is simultaneously displayed on both displays. The iPhone’s accelerometer automatically deactives whichever keyboard is oriented downward to avoid inadvertent data entry from that keyboard.
So Apple has found a way to implement a physical keyboard that has large keys with excellent tactile feedback without increasing the size of the iPhone at all. Simply genious.
