A couple of weeks ago internet was buzzing with the news of a i3D app for iPhone 4 and the iPad 2, which showed some truly amazing 3D effect without the glasses. Many people were wondering if it was going to be available or was it only to show off the power of front-facing camera of the iPhone 4 and the iPad 2. Well it is now available to download and its free!

Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay at the Engineering Human-Computer Interaction (EHCI) Research Group of the Grenoble Informatics Laboratory (LIG), University Joseph Fourier (UJF) have brought this amazing app i3D to life.

What i3D app does is use the front facing camera to track the user’s face in real time, this allows i3D app to update the 3D scene accordingly while keeping in view how the user is looking at the display. This gives the iOS user that they are looking at a small window.

Keep in mind that the app uses the front facing camera only, no accelerometer or the gyroscopes so it all depends on how your looking at the display not the way your holding your device. One of the downside or maybe not sure to call it a downside, is that it can’t be used on all lighting conditions, like thats going to stop you from using it.

It might seem to you that i3D app is creating a stereoscopic display but in fact its not. It gives the same picture to both eyes, producing something like a monocular 3D display. At the moment its not combined with stereoscopic display but in future it might, giving it a wonderful 3D effect.
