Believe it or not this was expected. One of the most powerful hacking groups in the world, Anonymous, has released a statement telling the whole world that they are going to “kill” Facebook on the 5th November. Yes you read that right.

If you are not familiar with Anonymous, it is a hacking group that has hacked many previous “big” websites releasing large amounts of data. Anonymous previously warned Sony and later started an operation against it, which lead to the PlayStation Network being down for over a month.

So why exactly is Anonymous going to bring down Facebook on 5th November? Well according to Anonymous Facebook has been giving out information to governments without the users being told about.

Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.

Anonymous warns users that putting your Facebook to “privacy” does not really mean all your information is private and even deleting your Facebook account does not really mean your information is safe, it can be recovered by Facebook if they want to.

Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your “privacy” settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you “delete” your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more “private” is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family. 

This hacking against Facebook is being called “Operation Facebook” and for all those users who use Twitter the hastag is #OpFacebook.

So are we going to see Facebook going down on the 5th November? As you would expect, Facebook will be well prepared to take Anonymous and it has some of the best engineering minds in the world. If you check the previous record of the hacking group Anonymous, it has brought shook some very powerful companies in the world.
