Download iOS 5.1 Without Upgrading Baseband For iPhone 4/3GS (Guide)

Those of you who have been stuck with an iPhone 4 baseband 4.11.08 for a long time would know the importance of updating to a new firmware without upgrading a baseband. Which could have saved a lot of users who are currently carrying locked iPhone. Well as you are already aware Apple has launched iPad 3 and with it a new firmware, iOS 5.1. Those of you who wish to upgrade to the new iOS 5.1 without upgrading to a higher baseband should follow this guide.

Preserve Baseband For iOS 5.1

Before you follow this guide here are a few important things to remember:

  • This method will upgrade you to the new iOS 5.1 without changing baseband. That means if you are on a lockable baseband you can chose this method to upgrade to iOS 5.1.
  • This method to preserve the baseband is for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS
  • This method won’t unlock your iPhone
  • Those of you who rely on carrier unlock MUST follow this method to maintain a lower level baseband while upgrading to iOS 5.1.
  • This guide is made for Windows OS

Things You Need

Download Redsnow 0.6.10b6

Download iOS 5.1

Download iTunes

Update To iOS 5.1 Without Upgrading Baseband

STEP 1: Create a folder and download redsnow from the link above to that folder.

STEP 2: Download iOS 5.1 for your iOS device from the link above and place it in the same folder.

STEP 3: Now extract redsnow 0.9.10b6

STEP 4: Right click redsnow.exe and “Run as administrator”

STEP 5: Open redsnow and select “Extras”

STEP 6: Select “custom IPSW”

STEP 7: Now head back to the folder in which you saved your iOS 5.1 firmware and click open.

STEP 8: Redsnow will customize the IPSW for you to preserve baseband. Once it is done it will show that it has successfully completed it.

STEP 9: Now you need to enter Pwned DFU mood. Click “Extras” and then “Pwned DFU” mood.

STEP 10: Before you click next make sure your iPhone 4/3GS is turned off and plugged in to the computer.

STEP 11: If you already know how to enter DFU mood, do now. If not simply follow the on-screen instructions.

STEP 12: Once the whole process is done you will be in DFU mood.

STEP 13: Now launch iTunes.

STEP 14: Chose your iOS device from the list on the left and then hold down “Shift” and click “restore”

STEP 15: Now select the “NO_BB” IPSW which has been customized.

STEP 16: Well done. If you have followed the steps above correctly you will now be on iOS 5.1 with the same baseband as you previously had.

    yes thnx good job for no baseband upgrade thnx mypolo but i dont know new gavey sim by Applenberry work with iOS 5.1 BB: 04.11.08 ?

    new gevey sim didn’t not work with iOS 5.1 BB 4.11.08, so do not update your iphone to iOS 5.1..

    I have error#3194 and how can I get rid of it.
    I know the hosts file already point to 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com as in /windows/systems32/drivers/etc/host

    hey I have iphone 4 ios 4.3.2, BB 04.10.01 and i’m using gevey sim – if I update my 4.3.2 to 5.1 with preserved BB then I can still use my gevey sim card ?

      yes you can … i just upgraded to 5.1.1 from 4.3.3 …. i am using gevey sim … but you have to preserve you baseband of 4.3.3 … gud luck

        Jasim, I had upgraded my iPhone 4 from 5.1 to 5.1.1 and now stuck on unlock screen. I am using Gevey sim and also preserved the BB 4.10.01 while upgrading to 5.1.1.

        I need to know how did you unlock your phone. Appreciate your prompt reply.

    I am currently on 5.0.1 bb 4.10.01, if I update but preserve baseband to 5.1 will I still be able to use tmobile sim card?

    When I use “Custom IPSW” button and selecting the file iPhone3,1_5.1_9B176_Restore.ipsw, message “Memory exhausted” appear. This is happening in Win7 and WinXP. How to solve this issue? I tried use different Compatibility mode but it didn’t work.

    Well, How Can I upgrade my iphone 4 to iOS 5.0.1 instead of 5.1 preserving my basband. I am on iOS 4.3.5 with BB 04.11

    If you stayed at 4.XX you can NOT upgrade to 5.0.1,Apple is not signing 5.0.1.If you upgraded to 5.0.1 and saved your APTICKET’S you can upgrade to 5.1 and go back to 5.0.1,,or 4.X.X that has saved SHSH’s,,
    So if you never upgraded to 5.0.1 your SCREWED,You have to have your APTICKET’s for 5.0.1 in order to upgrade and then downgrade,and the same goes for 4.XX you have to have your SHSH’s saved and you can only save(APTicket’s and SHSH’s)while Apple is signing that particular IOS.
    You can not upgrade from 4.X.X to any other ios EXCEPT 5.1
    Remember SAVE your APTickets from now on,(You can not save SHSH’s anymore)

    I am on ios 5.0, 4.11.08. What is the best way forward. Should I upgrade to 5.1 with BB preserved or should I upgrade to 5.0.1 with the same baseband.

    Is there an unthethered jailbreak for 5.1 as yet?

    I just have downloaded the iPhone3,1_5.1_9B176_Restore for iPhone 4 (GSM) but I could not find any IPSW file in the download. There are only DMG files. Can anyone help me in this regard?

    PS: I also tried to download the IPSW file from other locations but not getting IPSW file.

    Hi, i’m currently using 4.1(8B117) BB is 02.10 is this factory unlocked Iphone 4 or not? if i use you mothad and install to 5.1 can agian able to jail break? how?
