Create Custom IPSW File For iOS 5.1.1 To Preserve Baseband For Unlocking iPhone 4/3GS (Guide)

By -

As you might already be aware iPhone Dev team have given the popular jailbreaking tool redsnow a major upgrade recently. The upgrade was the ability to downgrade A5 devices, as a result it over shadowed some other important features of redsnow and that is the ability to create custom IPSW file for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

You might be wondering why do you need to create a custom IPSW file for iOS 5.1.1. Well this guide is for those people who rely on unlocking their iPhone. If you have an iPhone which is carrier locked and you want to update to a new version without changing baseband you will need to create a custom IPSW file.

Well folks if you were looking to create a custom IPSW file for iOS 5.1.1, look no further as we have the guide right here.

Create Custom IPSW For iOS 5.1.1 To Preserve Baseband

You Need:

Download redsnow 0.9.11b4

Download original IPSW iOS 5.1.1 For iPhone 4/3GS

Procedure To Preserve Baseband

STEP 1: Download redsnow from the above link

STEP 2: Start redsnow and head over to Extras > Custom IPSW.

STEP 3: Select the original IPSW file for your iOS device which you downloaded from the above link.

STEP 4: Redsnow will now create the custom IPSW file, the one that has preserved the baseband meaning you will still be on the previous version (baseband).

STEP 5: Enter into Pwned DFU mood by going to Extras > Pwned DFU. Just follow the on-screen instructions.

STEP 6: Once your iPhone is in Pwned DFU mood, go to iTunes and press Shift+Restore (Windows) or Option+Restore (Mac). You will need to select the correct IPSW file it will have a prefix “NO_BB”.

STEP 7: As this is a tethered jailbreak you will need to boot tethered while it is trying to reboot after restoring. To boot tethered simply go to Extras > Just Boot.

You will now have a custom IPSW running on your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS for iOS 5.1.1 with a preserve baseband and get your iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS unlocked via Ultrasnow fixer.

SAM Unlock iOS 5.1.1

Those folks who have unlocked via SAM method can create a custom IPSW and run iOS 5.1.1 (with saved unlock activation tickets) but as this is a tethered jailbreak it will create many problems so I advise you not to do so until we get an untethered jailbreak.

  1. @David Gonzalez

Some says they successfully unlocked their iPhone running iOS 5.1.1 using their back-up activation, using this steps:

    1. Jailbreak your iPhone
    2. Install SAM
    3. Revert Lockdown to stock
    4. Shsh your backup activation ticket to this path
    5. Reboot
    6. Disable SAM
    7. Reboot, then wait until your Carrier Signal Appears.

  2. Hi everyone,

Quick question, now everybody just talk about the 5.1.1, what about 5.1?, if i have an iphone 4 factory unlocked running iOS 5.1 can i still have the untethered jailbreak?.

  3. when i select custom ipsw.. and select my ipsw of 5.1.1 (3gs).. windows broke down .. what s the answer ¿

  4. I’m confused with the procedure, does updating to 5.1.1 with a custom “NO BB” firmware automatically jailbreaks it?

On step 7 it says it will need “Just Boot” while rebooting after restoring, but it haven’t slected a Jailbreak yet.

  5. OK, I’ve got it in first try. EVERYTHING works. Now I got Iphone 4 with 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak and unlocked with Cookie ( SAM ) fully working.

ANA: I had to do jailbreak after restore with custom IPSW, then boot it with JUST BOOT. Then go to CYDIA – Repositories and install “FreeCoder’s Source”. After that you search up Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 untethered and hit install. After reboot you’ll have UNTETHERED jailbreak.

  6. i want to update my iPhone 3gs having ios 4.1 and firmware 6.15 with 5.1.1. before updating let me know if anyone facing any problem in updating with above procedure…..Please

  7. Hi, thanks for the description.

I hit a snag when redsnow rejects the 5.1.1 firmware that I downloaded, with a message that the firmware is not compatible to redsnow 9.11b1. I tried it with 9.14b1, same. I try with 5.1 it accepts it. But I need 5.1.1 to resolve the No network/Searching… issue in my 3GS.

  8. HElP..
In step 6 I got problem..
when i go iTunes and press Shift+Restore (Windows). You will need to select the correct IPSW file it will have a prefix “NO_BB”. i did select no BB & it went in process of confirming by apple during process, Iget stoped nd it shows “unknown error (3194) could not be restore.”
    please Help..
