Earlier this week European carriers have started stockpiling nano-SIM cards in the hope that Apple will incorporate nano-SIMs in the next generation iPhone

According to Boy Genius Report

Multiple carrier sources have exclusively told BGR that Apple is supplying nano-SIM adapters so its carrier partners can test how nano-SIMs work on their networks in standard test devices before they are widely deployed when the new iPhone is introduced.

Previously Apple and Nokia were fighting over who will get the industry standard nano-SIMs which Apple later won, meaning that world wide the nano SIMs of the future will be according to Apple’s standard.

The next iPhone, the iPhone 5 is expected to be launched fall of this year, somewhere between September and October. Many rumours have pointed to iPhone 5 having thinner display using the in-cell technology, 4G LTE technology, a larger 4 inch screen and much more.

The nano SIM card which will be expected in iPhone 5 will again put pressure on carriers to increase their standard to meet Apple’s requirement for iPhone.

These new nano SIMs are considerably smaller about ~40% smaller than micro SIM cards, which as you can guess does save a lot of space inside the space-conscious smartphones of these days.
