The nano-SIM for iPhone 5 is 40 percent smaller,12.3mm wider by 8.8mm high, and 0.67mm thicker than the present nano-SIM. The difference between nano-SIM of iPhone 5 and micro-SIM of iPhone 4S, is of the size only, otherwise functionally, it is same as the iPhone 4s.  At the time of release of the iPhone’s  nano-SIM, in the event, European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) mentioned that:

“Today’s SIM card designs take up a significant amount of space inside a mobile device. This space is more and more valuable in today’s handsets which delivers an ever increasing number of features,”

Drawbacks of iPhone 5 nano-SIM:

Although nano-SIM has many positive points, such as its size but there are some problems too. The micro-SIM can be created by simply sniping off the the normal SIM but the new iPhone 5 nano-SIM is 15pc thinner than micro-SIM, so it cannot be created in the same way. Although it can be cut in the same way but the thickness can not be copped up. The users have to buy the nano-SIM directly from the telecom operator, but with the help of an adapter you can change a nano-SIM card to a micro-SIM card or a normal SIM card.

Availability of Nano-SIM:

As per resources, it is said that telecom operators have already started manufacturing of nano-SIMs, in order to accomplish the needs of users of iPhone 5, while some warehouses are already filled with nano-SIMs, ready to be released in the market. It is expected that most of the manufacturers will now go for nano-SIM as these are much smaller in size and give space to more components in the phone.
