As mentioned above, if your iPhone get stolen you can report it as a stolen device which will pretty much make it useless for the person who has stolen it.
To report your iPhone as stolen, visit your operator the carrier which initially gave you the iPhone. Tell them your iPhone has been stolen and you want to blacklist it. They will further guide you through the procedure on blocking your device. It usually takes around 24-48 hours to block your iPhone which will result in the iPhone being “bricked”; meaning, making the iPhone completely useless on any network.
Use IMEI Number To Track iPhone
While pretty much everyone knows that IMEI numbers are used to report stolen devices but a few know that IMEI number can be used to trace the iPhone.
When you report a stolen iPhone i.e giving your IMEI number to the operators, the operator typically puts the IMEI number in an Equipment Identity Register (EIR), which further communities to Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR). This is basically the hub of IMEI numbers, from here your IMEI number gets blacklisted (if you have reported it as stolen) thus making it useless on every carrier in your country.
In very rare cases the police and other intelligence agencies can use the data to track your iPhone. But remember these are very exceptional cases and you might require special privileges to be able to do that. But the thing some people do to retrieve their stolen iPhone’s or other electronic devices is to register in websites such as Immobilise. These sites register your IMEI number and if police or any other agency happens to get your iPhone they can easily return your device.
These are just some of the uses of the IMEI number of your iPhone.
