Apple is currently the world’s most valuable company and do you know the reason it’s on that position? Well a lot of it has to do with the design and quality of Apple products. They “simply work”. Well it seems the high quality standard of Apple regarding the iPhone 5 has made a lot of Foxconn employees angry, leading them to go on a strike.
When iPhone 5 came out, the whole tech world was abuzz with scrutinizing every minute detail of the new iPhone from Apple. Many failed to find flaws in the device but some exceeded and one of these “flaws” were scratches on the device. Not the scratches on the device after using but right out of the box!
Apple’s iPhone 5 had scratches right out of the box.
Well it seems Apple is making sure that the quality of its products is not jeopardized. Apple has asked Foxconn to make sure it meets their high new quality standard so users can get the best iPhone.
Well it seems it has taken a turn for the opposite as Foxconn employees have taken strike over the “overly exaggerated high standards” Foxconn is asking its employees to make without giving any training whatsoever.
Apple has specifically asked Foxconn to increase the standards to; a appearance defect of 0.02mm, and scratches on back covers and frames to be adjusted. This has put a lot of pressure on the Chinese employees.
The real problem actually is the appearance defect of 0.02mm, which can not be seen by the naked human eye. According to one Foxconn employee, he mentions:
“A 0.02mm appearance defect is already beyond that of our vision. With such a demanding task, workers’ mental pressure becomes so immense that they have to vent it out.”
As we already mentioned previously that the demand for the iPhone 5 was outstripping supplies, this has caused Foxconn to ban holidays for its employees which were normally held between October 1st to October 8th as during this period it is a national holiday in China.
According to China labor watchdog; approximately 3,000 – 4,000 Foxconn employees have gone on strike to protest over this extreme high standards and the banning of holidays. Fights broke out between the administration and the employees leaving some hospitalized.
The banning of holidays and the extreme high standards have caused immense mental pressure on these Foxconn employees, do you think its right they have gone on strikes and to fight the administration?
