Apple has been bringing all its powers in the right form against Samsung to fulfill the loss the company has faced due to the the problems related to the patent in the past. Though the company recently collected a huge amount, about more than $1 billion, in damages from Samsung but still its not done, as the company is now much more conscious about its patent issues. But it was not the all time case with the fruit company, as it hardly used to patent anything. Now you must be wondering what made the company so considered for patenting everything! Here are the details.
The actual story which resulted in this policy to be adopted by the company lies in history that back in 2006, Apple was sued by Creative Technology when its iPod infringed a patent for a “portable music playback device.” After that Steve Jobs, the co-founder and former CEO assured to patent everything Apple invented, according to a New York Times report, and when it came to the iPhone, he declared “we’re going to patent it all.”
Though the issue doesn’t seem to be a big one but it caused the company to face a loss of $100 million, which was a noticeable strike for the fruit company. Due to this Apple also employed legal representatives to take part in monthly meetings with Jobs and various Apple engineers, in order to determine the projects that could and could not be patented.
If your are thinking why this patent system is so important then, to tell you that it gives authority to the companies like Apple to invent, produce and perfect technologies over a period of time, so this simply means that through this method the company can protect those inventions. Although, some individuals don’t necessarily agree with the patent mentality and believe that it is a barrier for smaller companies from innovating.
