iOS Core Elements Successfully Ported To Nokia Smartphone!

By -

This might be big! Core elements of iOS - Apple’s mobile operating system, the one that is currently running on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch - has successfully been ported to a Nokia smartphone! To be specific a Nokia N900. So how did this all happen? Well check out the details regarding iOS being ported to a Nokia smartphone.

iOS Runs On Nokia

Winocm, a hacker who has been in the news regarding jailbreaking iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 has now got something else under his sleeves - and this is far cooler then anything we have heard recently.

Apple’s operating system, iOS, has successfully been ported to Nokia N900 smartphone! I suggest you read this phrase again.

The phrase “iOS successfully ported to Nokia N900” is slightly true. As not the entire operating system has been ported; only the core elements. This means that Apple’s iOS core functionality has been ported, so there is no GUI (Graphical User Interface). Instead we have a command-like interface as you can see from the pictures below.

What Winocm did is port the Darwin Kernel to ARM architecture. Those of you who are a bit tech savvy would know that Darwin Kernel is the core operating system that currently runs on iPhone OS and Mac OS. It is basically the foundation, which acts like a bridge between the core iOS (kernel) and everything else on top of it.

In more simple words; this is epic!

Now porting iOS to a non-Apple hardware is simply very huge. It opens the door for many possibilities, and the obvious thing that comes to our mind is that one day iOS will run on non-Apple hardware such as a Nokia smartphone or an Android one!

The hacker behind this has made the project open-source, therefore other software developers around the world can contribute to it and maybe release iOS for other smartphones!

Okay, let’s not get too carried away with this shall we.

Winocm has mentioned that he does not plan to integrate the graphical UI right now, instead will focus more on the core elements and to fix bugs. Fixing bugs is going to take a lot of time as there are literally a lot.

So after the reading the entire thing, one thing must surely come in to your mind; are we going to get iOS on other non-Apple hardware? Well the answer for the moment will be a “no”. Not because the developers don’t want to but because there are so many ramifications.

Emm, let’s change it to a “not yet”, because after all this is an open-source project and many hackers are going to start working on this.

iOS being ported to Nokia smartphone is maybe the start of something big or a simple hobby of a couple of hackers. Whatever it maybe, it has opened the doors for something big to come.
