Hackers by the name of AntiSec have leaked just over a million Unique Device Identifier/Identification (UDID). So hackers went after Apple, right? Well no. They managed to hack the information from Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)! Yup, they got all this information from the FBI.
You might already know about AntiSec, the infamous hacking group which has been responsible for many hackings in the past. But this time they bring us something new and that is about our privacy and our personal information.
AntiSec which hacked FBI managed to get over 12 million UDIDs’ but only decided to leak over a million as “it would be just enough”. The reason for publishing a million UDID’s was to get attention that FBI has over 12 million UDID information with them. The information can range from; names, addresses, cell phone numbers, tokens and much more.
Now this is something to worry about as FBI has got enough information from just your UDID that they can easily track you.
So how did AntiSec managed to get the information from the FBI? Well they mention it here:
During the second week of March 2012, a Dell Vostro notebook, used by Supervisor Special Agent Christopher K. Stangl from FBI Regional Cyber Action Team and New York FBI Office Evidence Response Team was breached using the AtomicReferenceArray vulnerability on Java, during the shell session some files were downloaded from his Desktop folder one of them with the name of ”NCFTA_iOS_devices_intel.csv” turned to be a list of 12,367,232 Apple iOS devices including Unique Device Identifiers (UDID), user names, name of device, type of device, Apple Push Notification Service tokens, zipcodes, cellphone numbers, addresses, etc. the personal details fields referring to people appears many times empty leaving the whole list incompleted on many parts. no other file on the same folder makes mention about this list or its purpose.
The information that has been leaked online by AntiSec has been stripped of very private information but has kept enough to make someone worry about their privacy.
Why does the FBI have 12 million UDIDs with them?
