What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when people ask about the features of an iPhone 4S? Personally for me, the first thing is Apple’s much hyped voice command feature Siri. It seems it is going to get a serious competitor from Google, and it is called Majel.
It was reported back in December last year that Google was working on a project that would develop a Siri competitor, a new voice command application for Android. Although a voice command feature already exists in the form of Voice Actions, it is no way near at the level of Siri. It seems its all about to be changed.
The name Majel comes from Majel Barrett-Roddenberry who voiced the Federation Computer from Star Trek and just like the “computer” on Star Trek, it will have no emotions it will simply be a computer.
Last year Matias Duarte, Google’s Director of Android OS User Experience mentioned:
Our approach is more like Star Trek, right, starship Enterprise; every piece of computing surface, everything is voice-aware. It’s not that there’s a personality, it doesn’t have a name, it’s just “Computer.” And you can talk to it and you can touch it, you can interact with it at the same time as you talk with it. It’s just another way to interface with the computer.
Majel Google Assistant
It is now being reported according to wallStreetJournal that Google has accelerated plans to develop Majel, citing its cliché people familiar with the matter.
Google, meanwhile, has accelerated plans to launch its own Siri competitor that would work on Android-powered devices, people familiar with the matter have said.
This actually makes sense as Google’s I/O event is next week and just like every Google I/O event, it announces major changes to its current OS. So is Majel on the list? We highly think so.
Once Google announces Majel, it will be the de facto standard for all voice features for Android. Something that will definitely concern Apple and its Siri.
Apple’s Siri Vs Google’s Majel
Apple has currently set the standard for voice applications, although some came close to it such as Evi but these applications certainly can not match the power of Siri. Siri was recently given a much needed upgrade in iOS 6 such as launching apps, ability to check sports scores and others, so can Google’s Majel compete with it?
It certainly can! When Google launches Majel, maybe next week? It will surely bring some amazing features. We have already seen some amazing features that current voice applications on Android can do and one of them is Robin. Check out the video below to get an idea on how cool Majel might be.
Isn’t that pretty amazing? I know Siri can’t do that, yet.
Basically what I’am trying to say, and this is coming from a fanboy; Siri might have the home-ground advantage but it wont be the only king any more. Although Majel wont directly be able to compete with Siri but in places where Siri lacks the “intelligence”, Google’s Majel might be the answer.
