Apple has released Yosemite and the latest version of iOS 8.1 is coming out tomorrow but you can already use one of the best features of Yosemite and iOS 8 right now called handoff (continuity). Well here is how you can enable handoff feature for your Mac, iPhone, iPad or the iPod touch.
Enable Handoff Feature
Handoff is a great feature that allows you to work on one device and keep working on the other without having to log back into that specific part. For example if you have opened Maypalo’s website and were reading on something and leave it and use your iPad, you can start from that specific spot. It’s a pretty neat feature to have if you have multiple iOS devices.
Well enabling handoff feature is pretty simple. Just follow the step-by-step guide below and you are good to go.
Enable Handoff Yosemite
To enable continuity or handoff feature on OS X Yosemite on your Mac, head over to the Settings > General and near the bottom section there will be an option called “Allow handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices”, simply check that box.
It is as simple as that. But do that not every Mac will support it. If you have a Macbook Air, Macbook Pro and iMac which you have bought after mid 2012 you are good to go. But the Macs before that can’t support it.
Also note that your Mac should be connected to a Wi-Fi network and should have Bluetooth on for Handoff feature to work.
Enable Handoff iOS 8
Enabling handoff feature on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch is very simple. You need your iOS device firmware to be on iOS 8 and above and have Bluetooth on. Once that is done your basically good to go.
Head over to General > Handoff & Suggested Apps and turn on the Handoff feature. It is as simple as that.
Below is the list of all devices that support Handoff feature on iOS 8:
- iPhone 5 or later.
- iPad (4th generation), iPad Air, iPad Air 2.
- iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, iPad mini 3.
- iPod touch (5th generation).
If there is a continuity between your iOS devices, it will show you (on the iPhone) a logo of the app that is currently in the “handoff mode” - as you can see from the above screen shot. The icon displayed is Safari at the bottom left, simply swipe up and you will be back to where you were working from.
The Handoff is a great feature and one that is going to make you more productive. So definitely enable it on your iOS devices and enjoy the benefits.
